UN RARO RITROVAMENTO DI PERLE NATURALI
A RARE DISCOVERY OF NATURAL PEARLS

Una ventina di anni fa, presso Hurgada, in Egitto, sul mar Rosso, trovai un’ostrica perlifera (Pinctada (Meleagrina) margaritifera credo erythrensis) con all’interno 85 piccole perle (complessivamente c.a 14 carati, corrispondenti a più di 55 grani), più molte mezze perle nel mantello, su entrambe le valve.  L’ostrica in questione l’ho trovata, insieme a molte altre, in un fondale tra gli 8 ed i 15 metri, tra il frangente corallino della costa ed una serie di formazioni coralline, affioranti e non, a poche centinaia di metri alla costa stessa. L’area era soggetta a forti correnti di marea, l’acqua era piuttosto torbida, con una visibilità di pochi metri e le ostriche erano solitamente attaccate a formazioni madreporiche morte.  All’epoca, sapevo che un ritrovamento come il mio poteva essere un caso non frequente. In seguito ho approfondito la cosa e, lo scorso anno, sul Web, ho letto che le perle naturali sono ormai rarissime. Gli amatori si scambiano direttamente gli esemplari da collezione, per i quali è impossibile stabilire una quotazione legata a parametri fissi quali peso, forma e colore.

About twenty years ago, at Hurghada, Egypt, Red Sea, I found pearl oyster (Pinctada (Meleagrina) margaritifera erythrensis I think) with 85 small beads inside (total of approx 14 carats, equivalent to more than 55 grains), and many more half pearls in the mantle, on both valves.  The oyster in question I found, along with many others, in a depth between 8 and 15 meters, between the juncture of the coral coast and a series of coral formations and outcrops, a few hundred meters of the same coast. The area was subject to strong tidal currents, the water was quite turbid, with visibility of a few meters and the oysters were usually attached to dead coral formations  At the time, I knew that a discovery like mine could be an infrequent event. Later, I studied the thing and, last year, on the Web, I have read that natural pearls are very rare now. The lovers exchange directly from the specimens collection, for which it is impossible to establish a fixed price related to parameters such as weight, shape and color.
