Macularia santivesi ( Kobelt, 1906)

Sono dunque le Macularia le prime specie che incontriamo, e la prima di queste è una specie protetta, estremamente legata ad un ambiente particolare, quello degli scisti rossi che si rinvengono in luoghi particolarmente affascinanti, i canyon di Gorges de Daluis e Gorges du Cians meta turistica di notevole interesse per i paesaggi e gli impressionanti strapiombi di roccia rossa.  Questa specie è particolarmente localizzata in questi due canyons ed esclusivamente nelle zone dove gli scisti prendono il posto delle rocce calcaree per pochi chilometri; essa condivide lo stesso ambiente con l’altra specie endemica che si riscontra solo qui, la Solatopupa cianensis. Mentre di quest’ultima ne ho rinvenute numerose ovunque, di Macularia ne ho trovate molto poche; pochissime viventi, quasi tutte molto giovani e abbastanza ben nascoste. I pochi esemplari che ho raccolto adulti, erano morti, alcuni in terra altri sulla roccia esposta, ma con le parti molli essiccate per la disidratazione.  La consistenza del nicchio, che assume la colorazione del substrato, è molto esile e denota una carenza di calcio dovuta, plausibilmente, al tipo di roccia su cui vive; stessa cosa si verifica in Solatopupa cianensis.  Secondo Animal Base la specie potrebbe essere conspecifica di Macularia niciensis : “ Probably conspecific with M. niciensis, the conchological differences to M. niciensis seem to be ecologically induced.”  Con questa affermazione, non priva di plausibilità, ci troviamo subito al primo dei numerosi dubbi che ci affliggeranno durante tutto il percorso che faremo.  Fra gli esemplari di Gorges du Cians e quelli di Gorges de Daluis, non mi pare siano rilevabili differenze morfologiche.  Probabilmente durante il periodo nel quale mi sono recato in questi luoghi, un particolarmente asciutto inizio di settembre, ha influenzato il fatto che gli esemplari trovati fossero veramente pochissimi e costituiti essenzialmente da pochi gruppetti di giovani, la cosa certa è che la specie, per quanto ho potuto personalmente constatare, ha un alto rischio di rarefazione se non di scomparire del tutto; le rocce lungo strada, quelle che più facilmente sono raggiungibili, sono solo la parte minore di quelle che costituiscono le gole fino ai corsi d’acqua che scorrono in basso. La speranza è che le zone meno accessibili riescano a preservare ancora a lungo questi molluschi.  La località dei Gorges suddetti si trova a nordovest di Nizza e la strada si trova ad una altezza fra gli 800 ed i 1200 metri.
