Ibernazione ed estivazione  I molluschi marini vivono in un ambiente con temperature medie piuttosto stabili. I molluschi terrestri invece possono trovarsi a temperature molto inferiori allo zero in inverno e superiori ai 40 gradi in estate.  Per sopravvivere hanno sviluppato dei sistemi di "ibernazione" in inverno ed "estivazione" nei mesi più caldi.  Scavano nel terreno e si nascondono a profondità di decine di centimetri, si ritirano poi dentro la propria conchiglia e ne chiudono la bocca con una membrana detta "epifragma".  Usciranno all'aperto solo quando le temperature primaverili mitigheranno il freddo o quando quelle autunnali attenueranno la calura.

Hibernation and aestivation  The marine mollusks living in an environment with temperatures quite stable. The terrestrial molluscs instead may be located at temperatures well below the zero degrees in winter and above 40 degrees in summer.  To survive, they developed systems of "hibernate" in winter and "aestivation" in the warmer months.  They dig in the ground and lie at depths of tens of centimeters, then retreat into their shell and close the mouth with a membrane called the "epifragm".  They will come outside only when spring temperatures will mitigate the cold or when the autumn fade the heat.
